Food is any substance fed to an organism to provide nutrition. It may be in the form of seeds, nuts, fruits, roots or vegetables. More specifically, food is any food capable of sustaining life. Common food can be categorized into animal, plant or fungi. Most living organisms require food, and the food that they need may be obtained from the soil, air, water or food crops.

Plants and animals all derive nutrition from food, but not all of their food types are useful for them. Animal food includes flesh, bones, milk, eggs and organs. Plant food is basically any material containing nutrients that are suitable for plant growth and development, and is consumed by the plants for their nutrient content. Food is generally made up of plant, animal and fungi roots, and includes any material capable of sustaining life. Plants absorb water and carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, while animals get energy from the sun, the wind and other sources.

The food habits of people in the past were based on hunting and gathering. In those days, people gathered food for their daily consumption or for storage purposes. However, today we have developed ways to eat healthy, convenient and tasty foods that are both nutritious and delicious. Due to technological advancements, most of us now prefer eating foods that are ready to eat. Technological developments in the fields of Nutrition and food processing have greatly improved the quality of fresh foods and snacks.

A good way to improve your diet and nutrition is to include a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses, nuts and seeds. Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins and phytochemicals that improve the structure of the body and protect it from disease. Rich in fiber, antioxidants and phytochemicals, fruits and vegetables are good for health and nutrition. Some of the best fruits to see food in include mangoes, papaya, bananas, strawberries, carrots, asparagus and cucumbers.

Cereals, pulses, nuts and seeds are excellent sources of protein that improve the functioning of the body and build muscles. Other good sources of protein are lean meats like chicken and turkey, fish and seafood, eggs, cheese and yoghurt. Meats that are rich in Vitamin B are liver, lean beef and goat’s milk.

Foods that contain carbohydrates provide energy and provide many of the nutrients necessary for optimal health. Carbohydrates are excellent source of carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals that improve general health. One of the best carbohydrates to eat food is sugar-less, fiber-free and complex carbohydrate that comes in many varieties. Some examples of good carbohydrates include sweet potato, brown rice, sprouts, apples and carrots.
